Birkat ha-Chamah (Blessing of the Sun) Print E-mail
Written by Rabbi David Bockman

Croton Jewish Center gathered for an early morning service and siyyum (completion of the study of a talmudic tractate, accompanied by a party) on the fast of the firstborn, in which the firstborn of each Jewish family - who would otherwise have died in the tenth plague of Egypt leading to the Exodus - remember that without God's protection they, too, would have died in the plague. In 2009, this observance coincided with the once-every-28-year Birkat ha-Chamah (Blessing of the Sun), when Jewish tradition understands that the solar configuration returns to its cycle at the moment of the sun's creation on the fourth day of Genesis (a Wednesday). Here, people are looking for the sun as it peeks momentarily through the clouds, eager to recite the blessing specific to an occasion that people only get two or three opportunities in their life to recite.

Bonfires and Lag B'omer Print E-mail
Written by Rabbi David Bockman
Friday, 15 May 2009 14:45
CJC religious school celebrates Lag B'omer (the 33rd day of the counting of the Omer between Passover and Shavuot) in a traditional manner by building and lighting a bonfire. Although the custom finds its origins with the mystical tradition connecting Lag B'Omer with the death of R' Shimon bar Yochai, the supposed author of the Book of Splendor (Zohar), a kabbalistic commentary to the Torah. Rather than mourn his loss, Jewish mystics celebrated the fulfillment of an outstanding life that ended with a revelation similar to that of the Torah, replete with whirling flames and flashes of light, represented by the bonfire. In modern Israel, the holiday is a favorite among teenagers, who stay up all night singing, dancing and roasting potatoes and onions in the embers. CJC students also roasted marshmallows for smores. A relaxing and delicious time was had by all.

Tu B'Shevat Seder - The Year for Trees Print E-mail
Written by Seth Rowland
Sunday, 08 February 2009 18:19

Tu B'Shevat, the 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar -- celebrated this year on Monday, February 9, 2009 -- is the day that marks the beginning of a "New Year for Trees." This is the season in which the earliest-blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.

At Croton Jewish Center, the religious school held a festive seder in honor of the holiday.

Food is an important part of the spiritual life at Croton Jewish Center.  We nourish the heart and the soul.  Through food and shared experience we bring the seasonal holiday cycle to life.

You will see a bit of history.
